"Our Songs" by Akira Takayama
Songs, poems, stories
SAT 19 November 2022

What are the songs or poems that mean a lot to you personally? That you've known a long time?
That play an important part in your life, in your community, in your family? And that you enjoy singing on your own or for others?

If you can think of songs or poems like this, please get in touch. Because we are looking for people from Frankfurt and the region who would like to perform their song or poem in the concert 'Our Songs'!

The concert 'Our Songs' will take place on November 19, 2022 in the Main Hall of the Alte Oper Frankfurt. The idea for this comes from the Japanese artist and theatre director Akira Takayama. People from Frankfurt and the entire region will appear on stage and sing their songs or recite their poems in the many different languages of the city. Amateur singers are particularly welcome, as are people of every language and all generations.

The director, Akira Takayama, has exclusively provided songs or poems that have been handed down, which - whether the performers have been living here for a very short time or for generations - build a bridge to the country of origin or family tradition, and which, because of this, show a special, biographical connection.

Your contribution will be one of many in the performance 'Our Songs'. All those taking part will perform their song or poem alone and without musical accompaniment on the empty stage at the Alte Oper. The audience can listen to the concert inside the auditorium, the doors will remain open the whole time. The concert will also be streamed live online and projected on a big screen in the open air.

If you want to take part in 'Our Songs', please write to us either by email or by post. Please use our registration form for this purpose. Please send us a short text about yourself and what connects you to the song or poem you wish to perform. And tell us its title in the original language, if possible with a translation into German or English.

If you would like to take part or have any questions, please write to us by October 1, 2022 using our registration form, and send it to:

or to:

Once you have written to us, Akira Takayama will invite you to a preliminary conversation at the Alte Oper. If a very large number of people come forward, it is possible that not everyone will be able to take part and we will have to make a selection. However, we will definitely get in touch with you. Participants will not be paid a fee. Travel costs may be reimbursed if we agree to do so in advance.

We look forward to meeting you!
